Desert Festival of Jaisalmer

The Desert Festival is celebrated in Jaisalmer usually in the month of January or February.  Colorful craft bazaars are set up with beautiful lights on the full moon night.  Surely a not-to-be missed event.

The three-day event stresses more on local elements and heritage.  For example, this no-nonsense festival will only showcase Rajasthani folk songs and dance.  ‘The moustache competition’ is very popular among foreigners.  This is simply because of the surprise value attached to this event.  Foreigners can be seen posing for pictures with the winners.  This is truly a moment worth preserving.

Jaisalmer is known as the city of forts as in this city you are going to find plenty of palaces and havelis. Located at the very heart of the Thar Desert, many of the palaces give the impression as if they are made up of gold. The reason for that is they are actually made up of yellow sandstone and when the solar rays fall on it; it gives the illusion of made up with gold. The city has its own legends. It is believed that it was foretold by Lord Krishna, that a descendent of the Yadav dynasty would built his kingdom on the top of Trikuta hill and that is exactly what happened when in 1156 A.D, Raja Jaiswal, a descendant of the Yadav clan, actually founded his capital on the predicted located.  There are lots of interesting places to visit here.
