A visit to Wayanad wildlife sanctuaries
During this season of vacation I happened to pay a visit to one of the popular and famous wildlife sanctuaries, the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. Visiting any wildlife sanctuary makes me feel getting closer to the nature. The lush green trees, the clear sunny sky above, the sweet noise of birds, the melodious sound of water flowing really takes you away from all your daily tension. We always have a fast and rushing life in our urban days. Work, assignments and projects, we all are running after money.
Visiting these wildlife really makes us feel how beautiful our planet is and how we are destroying this beauty. When you are in any such place, you need not do any special thing to get relaxed. Even if you just sit somewhere with your eyes closed you are bound to hear many such relaxing sweet sound of nature which we have never tried to hear. I have gone in more than 10 safaris in these jungles, with 2 hours of duration each inside the Tiger heartland. But to my utter surprise, I was not able to spot a single tiger even after visiting the place for more than 10 times. You can very easily spot a leopard, but sighting the national animal of India is really a tough job.
Actually it is again our fault for which I was not able to spot a tiger. We are continuously depleting the forests which are not only the residence of the tigers but also the food source for them. Apart from them secret hunting is another reason which has drastically brought the tigers in the endangered species list. If we do not stop, it won’t be far when we will tell our children tales of tiger, like we do for the mighty dinosaurs. Later on I found out that tigers are actually shy creatures and that increased my respect for them. And that the reason for me to experience my experience with you, because these beautiful stripped animals really need more lovers as their population is decreasing faster than our growth rate.
Tigers are believed to have evolved from a species called miacids which are believed to have lived during the periods of dinosaur. Scientifically named as Panthera Tigris, these are small mammals with long bodies and is said to belong to the cat family. There was also a misconception that today tiger descended from the saber-toothed tigers, but they actually were another cat species which became extinct many millions of years ago. Tigers are said to have originated mainly in Asia. Even just a century ago there were 8 different types of tigers in the world, but now just 5 different types of tigers are left and the rest have really became extinct and vanished from the face of this earth.
Some of the varieties of tiger which still exist but under endangered category are:
Amur or Siberian tiger: These are generally found in the north-eastern Korean region and also in some parts of North-eastern China. These are the largest tiger found currently on the surface of the earth.
Bengal Tiger: These are generally white in color. All white tigers are some variations if this species itself. These are the rarest species of tigers and since 1950’s there is no trace of them found in the jungles. You can nowadays only see it in zoo only.
Indo-chinese Tiger, South China Tiger and Sumatran Tiger are three more species which can still be found. The 3 species which has become extinct are the Caspian tiger, Javan Tiger and the Bali tiger.
So stop using tiger or animal products today and thus save these endangered who are currently looking at us to save their family.
Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is actually very easy to reach. If you want to reach by air, then Kozhikode airport is the nearest airport. If you want to reach by railway, Kozhikode railway station is the nearest and is well connected with other rail links. You can also use the road transport system too for visiting the place. We used this particular road transport for visiting this popular place. The scenic beauty is just awesome. The place is very close to Kalpetta, nearly 110 kms from Kozhikode. You can also get forest rest houses as well as lodges near the wildlife sanctuary and also you can get plenty of rest houses in Kalpetta too. We stayed in one such lodge as it becomes easier to visit the place.
